Why Most SPM English Essay Advice Doesn’t Work

“Read more books.” “Use big words.” “Write longer essays.”

You’ve heard this advice a hundred times. It doesn’t help because it’s too vague. Here are 7 specific techniques that actually improve your SPM essay marks.

1. Open With a Hook, Not a Cliché

Every examiner has read “It was a beautiful Sunday morning” ten thousand times. Stand out.

Instead of: “One day, I went to the park with my friends.”

Write: “‘Run!’ My friend grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the exit. The ground beneath us was shaking.”

Starting with dialogue or action immediately draws the reader in. Examiners notice.

2. Use the STAR Method for Narrative Essays

Every strong narrative paragraph follows STAR:

  • Situation — set the scene in 1-2 sentences
  • Thought — what the character thinks/feels
  • Action — what happens
  • Reflection — what it means

This gives your essay depth without you having to think about “what to write next.”

3. One Idea Per Paragraph (The Rule Most Students Break)

Each paragraph should make ONE clear point. If you’re writing about “the importance of exercise,” don’t mix physical health, mental health, and social benefits in the same paragraph.

Paragraph structure:

  • Topic sentence (your point)
  • 2-3 supporting sentences (evidence/examples)
  • Closing sentence (link back to the essay question)

4. Replace Weak Verbs With Strong Ones

Weak essays overuse “is,” “was,” “have,” and “make.” Replace them:

WeakStrong
She was sadShe sobbed quietly
He made a decisionHe resolved
It was rainingRain hammered the windows
They went to schoolThey trudged to school

You don’t need “big words” — you need precise words.

5. Time Your Essay Writing

SPM gives you 90 minutes for the Writing paper. Students who don’t manage time often rush the Continuous Writing essay.

Time allocation:

  • Directed Writing: 45 minutes
  • Continuous Writing: 55 minutes
  • Review: 5 minutes

Set a timer when you practise. If you consistently take too long, you’ll know before the exam.

6. Use Transition Words (But Not Too Many)

Connect your paragraphs with transitions:

  • Adding: Furthermore, In addition, Moreover
  • Contrasting: However, On the other hand, Nevertheless
  • Sequencing: First, Subsequently, Finally
  • Concluding: In conclusion, Ultimately, All things considered

Use ONE per paragraph transition. Overusing them makes your essay sound robotic.

7. End With a Strong Conclusion

Your conclusion should do two things:

  1. Summarise your main point (not repeat it word-for-word)
  2. Leave a lasting impression

Weak ending: “In conclusion, I think exercise is important.”

Strong ending: “The choice is yours — thirty minutes of movement today, or years of health problems tomorrow. Your body is the only one you’ll ever get.”

How to Practise These Techniques

Pick ONE technique per week. Write a practice essay focusing on that technique. Get feedback from someone who knows SPM marking — not just “good” or “need improvement,” but specific comments on what works and what doesn’t.

That’s the difference between practising and actually improving.
