Why Article Writing Appears Every Year in SPM

Article writing is one of the most common formats in SPM English Directed Writing. It appears almost every other year, and students who master this format have a reliable advantage. The article format tests whether you can write for a school magazine, newspaper, or bulletin — all of which require a clear title, engaging opening, and organised body paragraphs.

The Article Format Breakdown

Title

Every article needs a catchy, relevant title. Do not simply restate the question. If the question asks you to write about the benefits of recycling, don’t write “The Benefits of Recycling.” Instead, try something like “Go Green: Why Every Student Should Recycle.”

Author’s Name

Write “By: [Your Name]” below the title. This is a format requirement that many students forget — losing easy marks.

Opening Paragraph

Your opening must hook the reader. Three approaches that work:

  1. A question: “Have you ever wondered how much food your school canteen wastes every day?”
  2. A shocking fact: “Malaysians generate over 38,000 tonnes of waste daily — enough to fill 40 Olympic swimming pools.”
  3. A personal anecdote: “Last month, I watched my school throw away 50 trays of untouched food after a school event.”

Body Paragraphs (2-3 paragraphs)

Each paragraph covers one content point from the question. Use the PEEL structure:

  • Point: State the main idea clearly
  • Evidence: Give a specific example or fact
  • Explanation: Explain why this matters
  • Link: Connect back to the topic or transition to the next point

Closing Paragraph

End with a call to action or a forward-looking statement:

  • “It is time for every student to take action. Start small — bring your own water bottle and say no to plastic straws.”
  • “Together, we can make our school a greener, cleaner place for future generations.”

4 Common Mistakes in Article Writing

1. No title or wrong title format. The article must have a title. Without it, you lose marks before the examiner even reads your content.

2. Writing it like a letter. Articles do not start with “Dear readers” or end with “Thank you.” They are not letters. Write naturally as if for a magazine.

3. Listing points without developing them. Each content point needs at least 3 sentences. “Recycling saves the environment” is not enough — explain HOW and give a real example.

4. Ignoring the target audience. If the question says the article is for a school magazine, write for students. If it says a community newsletter, write for adults. The tone must match.

Time Management for Article Writing

In the SPM exam, you have approximately 45 minutes for Directed Writing. Allocate your time like this:

  • 5 minutes: Read the question, identify all content points, plan your outline
  • 30 minutes: Write the article
  • 10 minutes: Check grammar, spelling, and ensure all content points are addressed
