How to Write a Good Topic Sentence for SPM Essays

A strong topic sentence tells the examiner exactly what your paragraph is about. Most SPM students either skip it or write it wrong. Here's how to get it right every time.

What Is a Topic Sentence and Why Does It Matter?

A topic sentence is the first sentence of a paragraph that tells the reader what the paragraph is about. Think of it as a signpost — it tells the examiner where you’re going before you get there.

In SPM English essays, a clear topic sentence does two things:

  1. Shows the examiner you have a plan. Examiners read hundreds of essays. A clear structure makes yours easier to follow — and easier to award marks to.
  2. Keeps your paragraph focused. Without a topic sentence, paragraphs tend to wander. Every sentence in the paragraph should connect back to the topic sentence.

After 8 years teaching SPM English, I’ve noticed that students who write strong topic sentences consistently score 5-8 marks higher on their essays than those who don’t.

What Makes a Good Topic Sentence

A good topic sentence has two parts:

1. The Topic (What You’re Writing About)

This is the subject of your paragraph.

2. The Controlling Idea (What You’re Saying About It)

This is your angle, argument, or point about the topic.

Formula: Topic + Controlling Idea = Topic Sentence

Examples:

Good vs Bad Topic Sentences

Bad: Too Vague

  • “Social media is a thing.”
  • “I want to talk about exercise.”
  • “English is important.”

These tell the examiner nothing about what the paragraph will argue.

Bad: Too Broad

  • “Technology has changed the world.”
  • “Education is the most important thing in life.”

These are too big for one paragraph. You can’t cover “all of technology” in 5-6 sentences.

Bad: Too Specific (Actually a Supporting Detail)

  • “67% of Malaysian teenagers use Instagram daily.”
  • “My friend Ahmad failed his English exam because he played games all night.”

These are evidence, not topic sentences. They support a point but don’t introduce one.

Good: Clear and Focused

  • Excessive social media use reduces students’ concentration during study sessions.
  • Regular morning exercise helps students stay alert throughout the school day.
  • Reading English newspapers daily is the most effective way to expand vocabulary.

Each one tells you exactly what the paragraph will discuss.

Topic Sentences for Different Essay Types

Argumentative Essays

For argumentative essays, each body paragraph needs a topic sentence that presents one reason supporting your stand:

Stand: Social media should be banned in schools.

  • Paragraph 2: “Firstly, social media distracts students from paying attention during lessons.
  • Paragraph 3: “In addition, social media encourages cyberbullying among school students.
  • Paragraph 4: “Furthermore, excessive screen time from social media leads to poor sleep quality.

Notice how each topic sentence presents a distinct point. This is the structure examiners reward in essay writing.

Narrative Essays

For narrative essays, topic sentences guide the reader through the story:

  • The morning started like any other school day.” (setting)
  • Everything changed when I opened my locker.” (rising action)
  • In that moment, I realised what true friendship meant.” (climax/reflection)

Descriptive Essays

For descriptive essays, each topic sentence introduces a new aspect of what you’re describing:

  • The first thing visitors notice about Penang is the aroma of street food.
  • Beyond the food, the island’s architecture tells stories of its multicultural past.
  • At night, Georgetown transforms into a different world altogether.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Starting with “In this paragraph, I will discuss…”

This is clunky and wastes words. Just state your point directly.

  • “In this paragraph, I will discuss how exercise improves health.”
  • “Regular exercise dramatically improves both physical and mental health.”

Mistake 2: Asking a Question

Questions don’t work as topic sentences because they don’t state a position:

  • “Have you ever wondered why exercise is important?”
  • “Exercise is essential for maintaining good health during exam season.”

Mistake 3: Using “I think” or “I feel”

These weaken your topic sentence. State your point as a fact:

  • “I think social media is bad for students.”
  • “Social media negatively impacts students’ academic performance.”

Mistake 4: Cramming Two Ideas into One Sentence

Each paragraph should cover one point:

  • “Social media causes cyberbullying and also wastes students’ time.”
  • “Social media creates an environment where cyberbullying thrives among students.” (one paragraph)
  • “Social media wastes valuable study time that students cannot afford to lose.” (next paragraph)

Practice: Fix These Topic Sentences

Rewrite these weak topic sentences:

  1. “I want to write about pollution.”
  2. “There are many reasons why reading is important.”
  3. “In this paragraph, I will explain about healthy eating.”
  4. “70% of students don’t exercise enough.”

Suggested improvements:

  1. “Air pollution in Malaysian cities has reached levels that threaten public health.”
  2. “Reading for just 20 minutes daily significantly improves vocabulary and comprehension skills.”
  3. “Healthy eating habits during exam season directly improve concentration and memory.”
  4. “Most Malaysian students do not exercise enough, leading to poor concentration in class.”

The Topic Sentence Checklist

Before submitting your essay, check each body paragraph’s topic sentence:

  • Does it come first in the paragraph?
  • Does it have both a topic AND a controlling idea?
  • Is it specific enough for one paragraph?
  • Does it avoid questions and “I think”?
  • Does every sentence in the paragraph relate back to it?
