What Is Word Formation?
Word formation is the process of changing a word from one form to another. In SPM, you’re often given a word in brackets and need to change it to fit the sentence:
“She made a wise _____ (decide).” Answer: decision (changed from verb to noun)
This tests your understanding of how English words change form with prefixes and suffixes.
The Four Main Word Classes

Adjective → Adverb
Simply add -ly in most cases:
- quick → quickly
- careful → carefully
- happy → happily (change y to i)
- possible → possibly (change le to ly)
- true → truly (drop the e)
How to Answer Word Formation Questions
Step 1: Identify the Word Class Needed
Look at the sentence structure:
- After “a/an/the” or before a verb → likely a noun
- Before a noun → likely an adjective
- After a verb → likely an adverb
- The action word → likely a verb
Step 2: Transform the Given Word
Apply the correct suffix (or prefix) to change the word class.
Step 3: Check Grammar
Does the transformed word fit grammatically? Check singular/plural, tense, etc.
