Direct dan Indirect Speech untuk SPM English: Panduan Lengkap

Apa Itu Direct dan Indirect Speech?

Direct speech memetik kata-kata seseorang dengan tepat, menggunakan tanda petikan: She said, “I am studying for my exam.”

Indirect speech (juga dipanggil reported speech) melaporkan apa yang seseorang katakan tanpa memetik kata-katanya secara langsung: She said that she was studying for her exam.

Peraturan Transformasi Asas

Tiga perkara berubah:

1. Perubahan Tense

Direct SpeechIndirect Speech

Present continuous →Past continuous
Simple past →Past perfect
Will →Would

May →Might
Must →Had to

Contoh:

  • Direct: He said, “I am happy.” → Indirect: He said that he was happy.
  • Direct: She said, “I will come.” → Indirect: She said that she would come.

2. Perubahan Pronoun

  • I → he/she
  • we → they
  • my → his/her
  • our → their

3. Perubahan Ungkapan Masa dan Tempat

Melapor Jenis Ayat Berbeza

Melapor Pernyataan

  • Direct: He said, “The exam is difficult.”
  • Indirect: He said (that) the exam was difficult.

“Said” vs “told”: “Told” sentiasa memerlukan objek.

Melapor Soalan

Soalan Yes/No — guna “if” atau “whether”:

  • Direct: She asked, “Are you coming?”
  • Indirect: She asked if I was coming.

Soalan Wh- — guna perkataan soalan, tapi tukar ke susunan ayat penyata:

  • Direct: He asked, “Where do you live?”
  • Indirect: He asked where I lived.

Penting: Dalam indirect questions, JANGAN guna susunan soalan:

  • Salah: He asked where did I live?
  • Betul: He asked where I lived.

Melapor Arahan

Guna “told/asked + seseorang + to + infinitive”:

  • Direct: “Open your books.”
  • Indirect: The teacher told us to open our books.

Untuk arahan negatif:

  • Direct: “Don’t be late.”
  • Indirect: She told me not to be late.

Pengecualian: Bila Tense Tak Berubah

  1. Reporting verb dalam present tense: She says that she is tired.
  2. Kebenaran umum: The teacher said the Earth revolves around the Sun.
  3. Situasi masih benar: She said she works at a bank. (jika dia masih bekerja di sana)

Kesilapan Biasa SPM

Mengekalkan susunan direct speech dalam indirect questions

Salah: She asked where was the library. Betul: She asked where the library was.

Guna “that” dengan soalan

Salah: He asked that whether I was free. Betul: He asked whether I was free.

Lupa tukar ungkapan masa

Salah: He said he would come tomorrow. Betul: He said he would come the next day.

Guna “say” dengan objek

Salah: She said me to sit down. Betul: She told me to sit down.

Latihan

Tukar ke indirect speech:

  1. “I have never been to Penang,” she said.
  2. “Where did you buy this book?” he asked me.
  3. “Please submit your assignment by Friday,” the teacher said.

Jawapan:

  1. She said that she had never been to Penang.
  2. He asked me where I had bought that book.
  3. The teacher asked us to submit our assignment by Friday.
