Ayat Bersyarat (If-Clauses) untuk SPM English: Zero hingga Third

Apa Itu Ayat Bersyarat?

Ayat bersyarat menghuraikan apa yang berlaku (atau akan berlaku) dalam keadaan tertentu. Ia sentiasa ada dua bahagian:

1. Syarat (klausa “if”)
2. Hasil (apa yang berlaku apabila syarat dipenuhi)

Empat Jenis Ayat Bersyarat

Zero Conditional: Kebenaran Umum

Struktur: If + present simple, present simple

Untuk perkara yang sentiasa benar.

Contoh:

• If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
• If it rains heavily in KL, the roads flood.

First Conditional: Kemungkinan Masa Depan Sebenar

Struktur: If + present simple, will + base verb

Contoh:

• If you study consistently, you will pass SPM English.
• If it rains tomorrow, the sports day will be postponed.

Kesilapan biasa: JANGAN guna “will” dalam klausa if:

• Salah: If you will study hard, you will pass.
• Betul: If you study hard, you will pass.

Second Conditional: Tidak Nyata Sekarang

Struktur: If + past simple, would + base verb

Untuk situasi andaian — perkara yang tidak benar sekarang.

Contoh:

• If I were the principal, I would extend library hours.
• If she had more time, she would read more.

Penting: Guna “were” (bukan “was”) untuk semua subjek dalam Bahasa Inggeris formal.

Third Conditional: Tidak Nyata Masa Lalu (Penyesalan)

Struktur: If + past perfect, would have + past participle

Untuk membayangkan hasil yang berbeza pada masa lalu.

Contoh:

• If she had studied harder, she would have passed.
• If I had known about the scholarship, I would have applied.

Kesilapan Biasa

Guna “will” dalam klausa if

Salah: If you will work hard, you will succeed. Betul: If you work hard, you will succeed.

Keliru second dan third conditional

Second: If I had money, I would buy a car. (tidak ada duit SEKARANG) Third: If I had had money, I would have bought a car. (tidak ada duit MASA LALU)

Esei Argumentatif

• First conditional: “If the government bans plastics, pollution will decrease.”
• Second conditional: “If every school implemented recycling, waste would reduce.”

Esei Naratif

• Third conditional: “If I had known what that day would bring, I would never have left.”
