Kenapa Kepelbagaian Ayat Penting untuk SPM
Bandingkan dua perenggan:
Semua ayat mudah: “Pollution is bad. It harms the environment. Many rivers are dirty. The government must act.”
Campuran jenis ayat: “Pollution, which has become one of Malaysia’s most pressing issues, is devastating our river ecosystems. Although the government has introduced stricter regulations, many factories continue to discharge waste.”

Jenis-Jenis Ayat
Ayat Mudah (Simple)
“The student studied hard.”
Ayat Gabungan (Compound)
Dua klausa bebas disambung dengan FANBOYS: “The student studied hard, and she scored well.”
Ayat Kompleks (Complex)
Satu klausa bebas + satu atau lebih klausa bersandar: “Although the student studied hard, she did not score well.”
Nisbah yang baik untuk esei SPM: 40% kompleks, 30% gabungan, 20% mudah, 10% gabungan-kompleks.
8 Cara Bina Ayat Kompleks
1. Subordinating Conjunctions

2. Relative Clauses
- “The teacher who taught us was very patient.”
- “The book which I borrowed was fascinating.”
- “The school where I studied is in PJ.”
3. Participial Phrases (-ing / -ed)
- Hoping to score an A, she studied every night.
- Exhausted by the exam, students filed out silently.
4. Appositives
- “SPM English, one of the most important subjects, requires practice.”
5. Conditional Sentences

Kesilapan Biasa
Run-on Sentences
Salah: She studied hard she scored well. Betul: She studied hard, and she scored well.
Comma Splices
Salah: The exam was difficult, she passed anyway. Betul: Although the exam was difficult, she passed.
Fragment Sentences
Salah: Although she studied hard. (tidak lengkap) Betul: Although she studied hard, she found it challenging.
