Perbezaan Antara “Memberitahu” dan “Menunjukkan”
Kebanyakan pelajar SPM memberitahu pembaca apa yang berlaku. Pelajar gred A menunjukkannya.
Memberitahu: The old man was sad.
Menunjukkan: The old man sat alone on the park bench, tracing circles on the armrest with a trembling finger. His eyes, red-rimmed and unfocused, stared at something no one else could see.
Generik: She was a beautiful girl.
Spesifik: Her long dark hair, always braided over one shoulder, swayed as she walked. A scatter of freckles ran across her nose, giving her face a perpetual look of curiosity.
Bank Perkataan: Deskripsi Fizikal
Muka dan ekspresi:
- weathered, angular, round, gaunt, freckled
- a warm smile, a crooked grin, furrowed brows, piercing gaze
- crow’s feet around the eyes, a dimpled chin
Badan dan postur:
- broad-shouldered, wiry, stocky, slender, hunched
- walked with a brisk stride, shuffled along, moved with quiet confidence
Ciri tersendiri:
- calloused hands (tunjuk kerja keras), ink-stained fingers (tunjuk penulis), a scar above the eyebrow
Personaliti: Tunjuk Melalui Tindakan, Bukan Label
Jangan kata “she was kind.” Tunjukkan kebaikan melalui apa yang orang itu buat:
During recess, while everyone rushed to the canteen, Nurul stayed behind to help Ahmad pick up the books he’d dropped. She didn’t say anything — just knelt down and started gathering them.
Pembaca membuat kesimpulan “dia baik hati” tanpa perlu diberitahu. Ini jauh lebih meyakinkan.
Bank Perkataan: Personaliti Melalui Tindakan
| Daripada… | Tunjukkan seperti ini… |
|---|---|
| He was brave | He stepped forward when no one else would |
| She was shy | She spoke so softly the teacher asked her to repeat herself twice |
| He was lazy | His homework sat untouched in his bag for three days |
| She was generous | She split her lunch in half and slid the larger portion across the table |
Cara Menggambarkan Tempat
Pendekatan 5 Deria
Kebanyakan pelajar menggambarkan tempat menggunakan penglihatan sahaja. Deskripsi gred A libatkan sekurang-kurangnya 3 deria.
Penglihatan sahaja: The market was crowded and colourful.
Pelbagai deria: The pasar malam stretched down both sides of the narrow street, tables groaning under pyramids of mangosteens and spiky durians. The sweet rot of overripe fruit mixed with the sharp sizzle of satay dripping fat onto charcoal. Somewhere behind the crowd, a radio crackled out a dangdut tune.
Bank Perkataan: Tempat dan Latar
Pasar/pemandangan jalan:
- bustling, teeming, crammed, shoulder-to-shoulder
- the hiss of woks, the clatter of plastic stools, the honk of motorbikes
- steam rising from pots, fairy lights strung between poles
Sekolah:
- the squeak of shoes on linoleum, chalk dust in a beam of sunlight
- peeling paint on corridor walls, the metallic clang of lockers
- the hum of ceiling fans struggling against the afternoon heat
Alam/kampung:
- dew clinging to lalang grass, mist rolling between hills
- the shrill chorus of cicadas, the distant crow of a rooster
- the smell of woodsmoke and damp earth after rain
Struktur: Wide Shot ke Close-Up
Gambarkan tempat seperti kamera merakam:
- Wide shot — keseluruhan: “The fishing village clung to the edge of the river, a handful of wooden houses on stilts overlooking the murky brown water.”
- Medium shot — zum ke satu kawasan: “On the nearest jetty, a row of fishing boats bobbed gently, their blue hulls faded by years of sun and salt.”
- Close-up — satu butiran spesifik: “A coil of frayed rope lay at the jetty’s edge, its end trailing in the current like a tired snake.”
Cara Menggambarkan Peristiwa
Sebelum, Semasa, Selepas
Struktur paling mudah untuk menggambarkan peristiwa:
- Sebelum — bina jangkaan: “The school hall buzzed with nervous energy. Students clutched their scripts, mouthing lines to themselves.”
- Semasa — tangkap aksi dan emosi: “When Siti stepped onto the stage, the murmuring stopped. She drew a breath so deep her shoulders lifted, then spoke — and her voice filled every corner of the hall.”
- Selepas — tunjuk kesan: “The applause started slowly, then swelled until it shook the windows.”
Deskripsi Aksi: Guna Kata Kerja Kuat
Deskripsi lemah bergantung pada adjektif. Deskripsi kuat guna kata kerja tepat.
| Lemah (banyak adjektif) | Kuat (dipacu kata kerja) |
|---|---|
| She was very scared and walked slowly | She crept forward, flinching at every shadow |
| The rain was very heavy | Rain hammered the zinc roof like a drum roll |
| He was really angry | He slammed the book shut and stormed out |
| The crowd was very excited | The crowd surged forward, cheering and stamping their feet |
Bank Perkataan: Peristiwa dan Aksi
Sukan/pertandingan:
- lunged, sprinted, swerved, stumbled, leapt, dived
- the whistle shrieked, the crowd roared
Majlis/persembahan:
- filed in, shuffled to their seats, craned their necks
- the spotlight swept across the stage, the music swelled
- thunderous applause, hushed silence
Cuaca/peristiwa alam:
- the sky darkened, lightning forked across the horizon
- rain lashed against windows, puddles swallowed the path
Bahasa Figuratif: Bonus Gred A
Penggunaan bahasa figuratif secara semula jadi menunjukkan kepada pemeriksa bahawa anda mahir berbahasa Inggeris:
Simile (perbandingan guna “like” atau “as”)
- The old library smelled like a mix of vanilla and dust.
- She was as calm as still water.
Metafora (kata sesuatu ITU sesuatu yang lain)
- The classroom was an oven in the afternoon.
- Fear was a stone sitting in my stomach.
Personifikasi (beri sifat manusia kepada benda bukan manusia)
- The wind whispered secrets through the trees.
- The old clock groaned every hour.
Tips SPM: Guna 2-3 contoh bahasa figuratif setiap esei. Lebih daripada itu berisiko kelihatan dibuat-buat.
Kesilapan Biasa dalam Penulisan Deskriptif
Kesilapan 1: Terlalu Banyak “Very” dan “Really”
Perkataan ini lemah. Ganti dengan alternatif lebih kuat:
- very tired → exhausted
- really happy → elated, overjoyed
- very big → massive, towering
Kesilapan 2: Guna Klise
Elakkan frasa yang semua pelajar tulis:
- “crystal clear water” → Cuba “water so clear you could count the pebbles at the bottom”
- “butterflies in my stomach” → Cuba “my stomach clenched like a fist”
Kesilapan 3: Menggambarkan Segala-galanya Sama Rata
Bukan semua butiran perlukan perhatian sama. Fokus pada 2-3 butiran utama yang cipta kesan paling kuat.
